Finding and reusing research datasets: Code-Based Data

Guide on finding secondary data for reserach and identifying suitable data archives for research dataset deposits.

Finding published code-based datasets and code hosted within community repositories

laptop with codeAnalysis and source code datasets are generally discoverable from the interdisciplinary data search engines but there are currently a couple of data archives (Zenodo and Code Ocean) that are more widely used specifically for code-based data. These archives preserve snapshots of code that have been published by authors. You can search for code which is being maintained or developed in the code repositories and sharing sites.

On this page you will find a list of general data archives and a list of data archives or sharing sites for code-based data. You can search re3data or FAIRSharing for a full list of research data archives publishing code-based datasets.

Interdisciplinary data archives

The University of Bath Research Data Archive is free to use for all University of Bath Researchers. The other general data archives are those that have been recommended by major funders or publishers.

Code repositories and code sharing sites

There are numerous source code repositories and sharing sites. The Software Sustainability Institute has guidance on choosing a repository. This is a list of the main code sharing repositories for software commonly used in the University.
